Daughters of Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) - Sayyida Zainab (ra)

Sayyida Zainab’s (ra) mother was Sayyida Khadija (ra) and she was the eldest of the prophet’s ﷺ daughters. Before the declaration of prophethood, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah ﷺ gave her in marriage to his cousin Abul Aas ibn ar-Rabi, and it was the first wedding of the Prophet’s ﷺ child.

When Rasoolullah ﷺ declared his prophethood, Sayyida Zainab accepted Islam, while her husband refused to do so. Sayyida Ayesha relates that Abul Aas was one of those who participated at Badr from the pagans’ side. He was captured by Abdullah bin Jubair al-Ansari (ra). He was later ransomed by his brother, while Sayyida Zainab (ra) was still in Makkah. She sent a necklace to ransom her husband, an ornament which her mother Sayyida Khadija (ra) gifted her during her wedding. When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah ﷺ saw the necklace he recognized it; he was moved at its glance and remembered Sayyida Khadija (ra) – his noble wife. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ released Abul Aas and the necklace too was returned to its owner, with a promise taken from the former that Sayyida Zainab (ra) would migrate to Madinah. Abul Aas fulfilled the promise. Later on, Abul Aas became a Muslim and the Prophet ﷺ did not separate them. However, it is related by Shuaib that Prophet Muhammed ﷺ sent his daughter Sayyida Zainab (ra) to Abul Aas (ra) by a new marriage (and a new dower according to another source).

Sayyida Zainab (ra) passed away in 8 Hijri, about two years before the passing of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon.
