Prophet's (ﷺ) Humility, Mercy and Politeness in Victory
7 Common Misconceptions About Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) & Their Responses
Prophet Muhammed’s (ﷺ) Humility, Mercy and Politeness in Victory
The world calls it “The Conquest of Makkah”, whereas it actually was the “Liberation of Makkah”. The people of Makkah gained social, religious and political freedom when Prophet Muhammed ﷺ freed it from the clutches of brutality. And for the Muslims living there back then, by being oppressed day in and day out, it was truly a blessing.
The liberation of the sacred city followed after the Quraishi pagans and the Banu Bakr – an ally with the Quraishi pagans breached the Treaty of Hudaibiyyah by killing the innocents of Banu Khuza’ah who were Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ allies.
Just five years before this liberation, Abu Sufyan who was so against Islam, was looking for the Prophet’s ﷺ body (astaghfirullah) after the Battle of Uhud. But he was brought into his blessed tent by Sayyiduna Abbas (ra), the Prophet’s ﷺ paternal uncle, when the Muslims had halted at Marr al-Zahran on their way to Makkah. Imagine what today’s king, ruler, president or a prime minister would have done to his opponent. But the merciful Prophet ﷺ told Abu Sufyan (ra): “Isn’t it time that you recognize that there is no god other than Allah?”
Now buried in the Prophet’s ﷺ awe, clemency, honor and kindness, Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (ra) accepted Islam. That was the quality of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. He always offered his opponents more than sufficient time to ponder over Islam, because that would please Allah, and result in their sins getting forgiven.
This sends a stark reminder to the extremists today, who, in the name of Islam kill innocents. To be harsh towards Muslims, to kill children and women, to be unforgiving towards non-Muslims is not an Islamic & Prophetic heritage. It was not the sword, but the merciful character of the Noble Prophet ﷺ which won his opponents’ hearts. The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you hear something bad about your brother (or sister), find seventy excuses (to forgive). (Reference: Bayhaqi, hadith # 7583)
Not just that, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, when he heard from his uncle Sayyiduna Abbas (ra) that Abu Sufyan (ra) liked to be recognized for who he was (the leader of Makkah), Prophet Muhammed ﷺ said: “He who enters Abu Sufyan’s house is safe, and he who locks his door (in Makkah) is safe, and he who enters the House of Allah is safe.”
Overall, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ has ten thousand men entering Makkah. Out of which one thousand wore coat of mails; only their eyes were visible. The battalion was a mix of both Muhajiroon (emigrants from Makkah) and Ansaar (the helpers/companions of Madinah).
Despite this strength, the Prophet of Mercy ﷺ entered Makkah with his head down, his chin pressed against His chest; a gesture like no other which showed extreme humility. While doing so, he was glorifying Allah and thanking Him for His favors. Who except a Prophet of God would have such an attitude that despite being tortured extremely for 13 long years, with his companions killed, they all forced to leave their beloved city, waged multiple war against him, would give peace and love in return? No one was harmed. What other examples do we find in human history of this equal, of forgiveness and humility?
On that day, when someone said “This is the day of fierce battle. Today Allah will humiliate the Quraish.” When Abu Sufyan (ra) heard this, he wanted to put this across to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: “Ya Rasoolallah!” and probably that was the first time he addressed Prophet Muhammed ﷺ as such, and continued: “Did you command the killing of your people?”
Prophet Muhammed ﷺ replied: “Today is the day of graciousness! Today Allah will make the Quraish mighty!” These prophetic words filled Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (ra) with joy.
When the Muslims entered Makkah, the non-Muslims met the Prophet ﷺ. So the Prophet ﷺ asked them: “O Quraish! What do you think I will do to you? How should I treat you?” They said: “You are a noble brother, and a son of our noble brother. We only expect good from you.” The Merciful Prophet Muhammed ﷺ said: “I will say to you what Prophet Yusuf said to his brothers: “This day there is no blame/penalty on you today. May Allah grant you his forgiveness and He is the Most Merciful of all the merciful” quoting the 92nd verse of Surah Yusuf from the Holy Quran.
The Makkans were are the only disposal of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. Imagine the positive impact these prophetic words gave to these defeated people. However, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ spared them from any humiliation and announced freedom at large, didn’t ask or force them to accept Islam. Then they themselves came in groups and started accepting Islam – seeing the mercy of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ.
