Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ) – The Social Reformer

The Beloved Prophet Muhammed (Pbuh) – The Social Reformer

It is difficult to count the number of changes Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ teachings brought, and all the reforms Islam performed, but in this article we will briefly discuss a few of the major ones.

*Prevalence of peace:* Before the advent of Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ teachings, Arabs used to fight for trivial issues. Robbery was common and crimes were appreciated if done against the rival tribes. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ put an end to such wars; united the Arabs as a nation in the brotherhood of Islam. Everyone were given equal rights and duties. The property of each person could not be touched without the owner’s permission. Peace prevailed, and “peace” (“Assalamu”alaikum) became a greeting.

*The fragrance of mercy:* Before the prophetic teachings became common, the poor and the weak people were under the mercy of rich and strong, who did not know what mercy was. However, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ not just taught the rich to like the poor and show mercy to them, but also to provide means so that the former too can improve their conditions. Apart from the voluntary charity, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ set a 2.5% tax on yearly income (known as Zakat), solely to benefit the poor.

*Women’s rights:* Women in Makkah before Prophet Muhammed ﷺ were treated as chattels. Many female children were buried alive as Arabs feared poverty because of them. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ prohibited this shameful custom. He ﷺ was the first person 1400 years ago, in the Makkan tyranny, that women to grant the same rights and duties as men did. As wives, women were ill-treated. So Prophet Muhammed ﷺ showed his exceptional character towards the mothers of believers and also said: “The best among you are those who are good to their wives.” As far as woman in the form of mother went, the noble Prophet ﷺ said: “Paradise lies at the feet of mothers”, and thus elevated the rank of motherhood till the end of times. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ gave rights for daughters, wives and mothers to inherit from their fathers’, husbands’, sons’ properties. All in all, the status of women went from being at the lowest to the highest in the society through Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ teachings.

*Orphans’ rights:* Orphans were treated badly fourteen centuries ago. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ warned the abusers of orphans with a severe punishment in the hereafter, and promised best of the rewards. Once he ﷺ said: “I and the guardian of the orphans will be in place in the next world like two fingers touching each other.” (Sahih Bukhari)

*Banning intoxicants like alcohol:* What the authorities are not able to do in the 21st century, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was able to do 1400 years ago. He called for a complete ban on all forms of alcohol and intoxicants. When the verses of the prohibition of alcohol were revealed, and Prophet Muhammed ﷺ informed about it to his people, they all flipped their barrels of drinks, never to be refilled – and after 14 centuries passing by, majority of Muslims still continue to follow this tradition, which only brings them goodness in health and hereafter.

*Encouragement of education:* Showcasing the importance of knowledge and the learned, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ said: “The ink of the scholar outweighs than the blood of the martyr.” (Jami al-Saghir). We all know the first word in the Quran revealed for us was إقْرأ “Read”.
