Sayyida Qayla bint Makhrama ؓ saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in the Qurfusa position. She said: “When I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in such a humble and tranquil manner, I trembled out of awe for him.”

Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri ؓ narrated: “When the messenger of Allah ﷺ would sit in the Masjid, he would sit in the Ihtiba position.”

The Ihtiba position is virtually the same as the Qurfusa position. It is to sit with one’s thighs pulled in towards the stomach while wrapping a turban or cloth around the shins and the back. This was a common sitting posture of desert people, because there were often no walls on which they could lean.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samura ؓ reported: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reclining on a cushion on his left side. Scholars have said that four things are from the Sunnah and should not be refused:
1. Perfume
2. Milk
3. A cushion
4. Meat

One may, however, decline to accept these things if s/he has a particular allergy towards them.

Sayyiduna Abu Juhaifa ؓ said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘I do not eat whilst reclining.’”

The purpose of this narration is to emphasise that the Prophet ﷺ would not use a cushion while eating. Ibn Majjah ؒ and Imam Tabrani ؒ recorded with a sound chain: “Once the prophet ﷺ was gifted goat meat so he sat up on his blessed knees and began to eat. A bedouin man asked (probably humbly), “What type of sitting is this?” The prophet ﷺ replied: “Allah has made me a noble servant and not a transgressing tyrant.” Imam Ibn Battal ؒ commented: “The noble prophet ﷺ sat in this way to show humility before Allah, that is why he said, ‘I am but a servant; I sit as a servant sits and eat as a servant eats.’”
