Prophet Muhammed’s (ﷺ) Cleanliness
Prophet Muhammed’s (Pbuh) Cleanliness
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the cleanest of Allah’s creation - be it be his sacred body, clothing or house. The hadith by Hind bin Abi Haala (ra) mentions that his ﷺ bare skin was bright and shining, which means those parts of his body which were uncovered by hair or clothing were the height of beauty and purity.
Prophet Muhammed ﷺ used to enjoin and encourage cleanliness, and discourage uncleanliness. He ﷺ clearly stated that cleanliness is one of the principles of Islam. Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Sa’ad (ra) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah is Good (free from defects and deficiencies) and loves goodness. He is Clean and loves cleanliness. He is Generous, and loves generosity. So keep your courtyards clean and be not like the Jews.”
Sayyiduna Sulaiman bin Suraad (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Clean your teeth, and keep yourselves clean, and perform actions in odd numbers, and Allah loves odd numbers.” (Narrated by Ibn Abi Shayba and Tabarani).
Sayyida Ayesha (ra) states that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam is clean, so keep yourselves clean – for none will enter Paradise except those who are clean.” (Similar hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) is considered to be a Hasan Hadith according to Khafaaji in Sharh Shifa)
It has also been narrated on the authority of Sayyida Ayesha (ra) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Ten aspects of natural disposition (fitrah) are: “Trimming the moustache and letting the beard grow, using a tooth-stick, cleaning the nose with water, trimming nails, cleaning the knuckles, plucking underarm hair, and shaving the private parts and cleaning them with water.” (Sharh al-Shifa) In other narration, we find the Prophet ﷺ say “clean your gums”. The Holy Prophet ﷺ warned against neglecting these for a long period (40 days).
In another hadith, the blessed Prophet ﷺ said: “Trim your nails, and bury the clippings, and clean your gums after eating; clean your teeth and do not come to me with your teeth stained and with a bad breath.” Narrated by Imam Tirmidhi on the authority of Abdullah bin Busr (ra).
