How Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ Teachings Gave Religious Freedom to non-Muslims

Islam calls people toward the Lord of the worlds, but does not pressurize the non-Muslims to convert to Islam. Preaching and propagation of Islam is different from forced conversion. Allah told Prophet Muhammed ﷺ in the Quran:

_Translation: Call people towards your Lord with wisdom and best advice, and converse with them in the most decent manner. Surely, your Lord knows well the one who strayed away from his path, and He also knows well those who are rightly guided. (Ref: Surah Nahl:125)_

Not just the Prophet ﷺ himself, the predecessors of Islam as well, particularly the Rashidoon Caliphs never focused on forced conversion. The Islamic jurisprudence also gives the right to non-Muslims to remain on their creeds and chosen paths, other than Islam.

*Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ letter to the people of Najran:* Once, the noble prophet ﷺ wrote a letter to the non-Muslims of Najran, and one of the sentences in it said: “The people of Najran and their allies have full protection of Allah and His Prophet ﷺ. Their lives, their (religious) laws, lands, riches, wealths, their people – both who are present within their boundaries and outside, their places of worship and Churches will be protected. Neither the priests, bishops nor the rabbis will be removed from their religious posts, and everything that they own will be protected. _(Reference: Tabqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa’ad, 1:228, 358)_

*How Muslim rulers must respect the non-Muslims’ faiths and sentiments:* Throughout history, many Christian and Jewish places of worship were in the lands which were under Muslim control. There are rules for Muslim rulers to abide by, to respect the faiths and sentiments of non-Muslims. Such rules and regulations can be found in Imam Kasani’s book which says: “The non-Muslims (with their majority living in the lands/localities falling under Muslim control) will not be stopped to (use the) cross, ring the (Church) bells, even if Muslims live there.” _(Reference: Bada’i al-Sanai by Imam Kasani)_
