Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) – The Best Statesman Ever
Beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) – The Best Statesman Ever
Adi by Haatim, the son of the celebrated Haatim Taai said: “No one in entire Arabia hated the Prophet ﷺ as I did. I was a man of noble birth, Christian by religion, and I enforced the rule which gave me one quarter of all spoils of war (maal-e-ghaneemat) gained by my tribe. This meant that I had a religion for myself and I was truly a king of my people. When I heard about the Prophet, I hated him. (1)
Adi lived in the northern Arabia. When Makkah was liberated, he realized that Islam would prevail all through the peninsula. And when the Muslims arrived in Tai, Adi fled his tribe to Syria along with his family.
Adi’s sister Sufaanah happened to be in Madinah temporarily, and she soon realized the influence of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ on his people. When she returned, she told her brother Adi that Muhammad ur Rasoolullah ﷺ is a prophet, not a king. She convinced Adi so that he could meet the Prophet ﷺ, while withholding the fact that she accepted Islam after seeing the way she was well-treated by Prophet Muhammed ﷺ and his people.
Adi took his sister’s advice and travelled to Madinah. His long report on his visit is narrated by Ibn Hisham in Sirah al-Nabawiyyah but here it is for you in short: “I went to see the Prophet ﷺ in his masjid. When I greeted him, he asked me my name, and I said: ‘Adi bin Haatim.’ The Prophet ﷺ then stood up and took me to his home. As we were walking to his house, an elderly weak woman stopped him. He stood for her for a long while as she explained what she needed. I thought to myself: ‘He is certainly not a king.’ He then took me to his room, gave me a cushion and said: ‘Sit on this.’ I said: ‘No, you sit on it.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘It is yours.’ I sat on the cushion and he sat on the floor. And again I said to myself: ‘He is certainly not a king.’” (2) The Prophet ﷺ always kept his behaviour as simple as this. It was the beautiful character of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ that won Adi’s awe; Adi accepted Islam after this meet.
