Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) an Effective Socio Economist - Part 1

Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) an Effective Socio Economist

Today, every other nation is running under the system of Capitalism, Socialism or Communism and struggling with the disadvantages of each of them. One cannot deny that all these systems have their own advantages as well, but it is also a matter of fact that none of these are proved to be downright successful in putting an end to the prevalence of social and economic backwardness & related challenges.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ ) taught that every individual is to be provided with some basic socio-economic rights, such as the right to access factors of production – land, labour and capital (economic justice), the right to be heard and redress of grievances (legal justice), and the right to safety, education, satisfaction of basic needs, access to public property, etc. (social justice) irrespective of their status and the state is responsible for this. Apart from this, the important steps that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took to establish a socio economic order were:

*1. Equal distribution of wealth amongst poor and rich*

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ ) took into consideration the welfare of all, the poor and the rich, the state and the people. Those who were rich were not disliked nor were the poor discriminated because being rich is not a sin; the wealth anyone possesses is from and for Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ ) taught that neither the rich should oppress the poor and accumulate all the wealth nor the poor should get equal share from the property of the rich, but the rich should spend in the welfare of poor thus resulting in fair distribution of wealth.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever has slaughtered a sacrifice should not keep anything of Its meat after three days." When it was the next year the people said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall we do as we did last year?" He said, “Eat of it and feed of it to others and store of it for in that year.” The people were having a hard time and I wanted you to help (the needy).

(Sahih al Bukhari)

*2. Common benefit over individual benefit*

The teachings of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ ) show us that he always preferred collective benefit over benefit of any individual, thus contributing to the betterment of society at large and disallowed the accumulation of public resources for individual benefit.
Abyad went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and asked him for assigning him (the mines of) salt as fief. So he (ﷺ) assigned it to him as a fief. When he returned, a man in the meeting asked: Do you know what you have assigned him as a fief? You have assigned him the perennial spring water.” So he (ﷺ) took it back from him.

(Sunan Abu Dawood #3064)

Similarly, hoarding or accumulating wealth and essential resources was also prohibited.
