Prophet Muhammed ﷺ – The Most Empathetic – Part 1

Prophet Muhammed ﷺ – The Most Empathetic – Part 1

Everyone on earth has emotions, few of them move us into tears. Tears sometimes disclose our emotional inclinations, suffering and empathy. Examining what brought Prophet Muhammed ﷺ to tears will help us take a deeper look into his sacred heart and soul.

Recorded in hadiths and history, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ shed tears over the sahaba’s illness. Once he ﷺ visited his dear friend Sa’ad bin Ubadah ؓ while the latter was seriously ill. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ didn’t just go alone, but many other companions accompanied him for the visit. However, when the Prophet with the kindest heart ﷺ saw Sa’ad ؓ in a deteriorated state, he was reduced to tears. Not withholding it, the companions also started crying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to the assembled: “Listen, Allah does not punish for what falls from eyes (tears) or the sadness which afflicts the hearts, rather He punishes or shows compassion based on the action of this,” and he pointed the tongue. _(Ref: Sahih Bukhari)_

If serious ailments and its suffering caused Prophet Muhammed ﷺ so much grief that resulted in him becoming tearful, then imagine how much sorrow the deaths of his sahaba caused him. We’ve shared earlier that Prophet Muhammed ﷺ kissed and cried over the death of Uthman bin Mazoon ؓ. _(Ref: Tabqat by Ibn Sa’ad)_

The hadiths also say that Prophet Muammed ﷺ shed tears upon hearing the lamentations of the Ansari ladies over their martyred men.

*Mourning Zaid bin Haritha’s ؓ passing:* Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd ؓ temporarily stopped visiting the Prophet ﷺ after the death of his father Sayyiduna Zaid bin Haritha ؓ. However, when Usamah finally went to see the Prophet ﷺ, our beloved ﷺ began crying immediately. He said to Usamah ؓ: “Why haven’t you come to me before now? Have you come only to sadden me?” The Prophet’s ﷺ wound had only opened after losing Sayyiduna Zayd ؓ, whom he once called him his own son.

The next day, as Usamah ؓ made his way to the Prophet’s house ﷺ, the Prophet ﷺ happened to be outside and saw Usamah ؓ approaching from afar. When Sayyiduna Usamah ؓ drew closer, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ told him: “You’re going to do to me again what you did yesterday (make me sad).” Usamah ؓ could see that the Prophet’s ﷺ tears had already begun to fall.” _(Ref: Al-Musannaf by Abdul Razzaq bin Hammam al-Sana’ani)_

…to be continued inshaAllah.

*Prophet Muhammed ﷺ - The Most Empathetic – Part 2*

Illness and deaths of his companions ؓ were not the only reasons which brought Prophet Muhammed ﷺ to tears. He was compassionate and empathetic toward the humanity, and worried for everyone’s success and well-being. He would cry when the verses of Quran, which deal with punishments, were read out to him, or when he recited them by himself. Many a times in desperation, he called out thinking of us and said: “O Allah! My nation, my nation!” and began weeping.

*A very important point:* Most of you might know that once Prophet Muhammed ﷺ asked Abdullah bin Mas’ud ؓ to recite Quran for him. So Sayyiduna ibn Mas’ud ؓ said: “Do you want me to recite it, when you were the one who received it?” So Prophet Muhammed ﷺ replied: “Yes, I feel happy when others recite it (too).” So, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud ؓ started to recite verses of Surah al-Nisa; his recitation was known to be effective and powerful.

During the recitation, Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ sacred eyes rained tears. When the reciter reached at the 41st verse of Surah Nisa, the noble Prophet ﷺ asked him to stop. _(Ref: Sahih Bukhari)_

If we analyze the surah till here, we see that initially, it talks about every person being the offspring of the same mother and father. Then the surah talks about guarding kinship, taking care of orphans, taking care of the orphans’ mothers, some spousal duties, issues related to inheritance, and the importance of giving charity.

However, Allah reminds Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, in the 41st verse of this chapter, of the peoples’ wretched and infernal qualities. Probably during that time, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ would have thought about those people who killed one another, who buried their daughters alive during the days of ignorance, who mistreated orphans and ate away their properties left by their dead fathers, who committed all sorts of sins – and He ﷺ will be bearing witness for all of these actions on the Day of Judgement – was probably too much for Prophet Muhammed ﷺ to cope up with in a single go, due to his utmost empathy for mankind.

There are many more instances when the Prophet ﷺ shed tears for the sake of this ummah. He remembered us, and was very concerned about humanity’s well-being, even while being in immense pain during his final moments on earth.

This unique empathy of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ will be the final ray of hope for the ones who’d have committed major sins in this world in qiyamah, and his ﷺ dua on the Day of Judgement will be for the sinners. Not that the sinners will get a support, but the empathy of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ would be at a far far higher level than anything else in this universe!
