Sahaba’s Ocean of Love for Prophet Muhammed ﷺ - Part 1
People are loved for their intellect, helping-nature, beauty, brilliance in any field etc. Every famous personality has something or the other which pulls us toward them. However, we may dislike these worldly people if other aspects of their lives are looked into.
On the contrary, the more a person tries to know about Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, the more beloved the Prophet ﷺ becomes to him/her. That was the case with the companions ؓ too. So, when asked how he and his friends loved Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, Sayyiduna Ali ؓ said: “I swear by Allah! We used to love Prophet Muhammed ﷺ more than we loved our children, our parents and wealth. We used to love him more than a sip of cold water when thirsty.” _(Ref: Al-Shifa by Qadi Ayad)_
*More beloved than themselves:* Not just in the times of happiness and well-being, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was beloved to his companions during testing times too. When brutally hit by the pagans of Makkah and having lost consciousness after receiving the blows, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr ؓ happened to prove his love for the Prophet ﷺ. As soon as he recovered, his first concern was not to check how bad he was hit, but to check if Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was in safety. Then despite being told that he ﷺ was safe, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr ؓ didn’t remain where he was, but went to see the Prophet ﷺ personally to satisfy himself.
*Prophetic love over life:* When Sayyiduna Zaid bin Dathinnah ؓ was captured by the pagans of Makkah and was tortured by having bits of flesh cut from his arms and legs, he was asked: “O Zayd! Wouldn’t you prefer that Muhammed (ﷺ) were in your place going through this pain, instead of yourself, and you were to find yourself with your family back home?” he replied: “By Allah! I wouldn’t prefer that he be pained even by a thorn, even if that meant I couldn’t be back with my family.” _(Ref: Tabqat al Kabir by Ibn Sa’ad, Seerah by Ibn Hisham)_
*More than a family member:* We know how a lady from Banu Dinaar anxiously lost her control when she heard that the Prophet ﷺ got injured at Uhud. She couldn’t stop herself, and went out to see with her own eyes if the Prophet ﷺ was okay. On the way, despite learning about her father’s, husband’s and son’s death, she still wanted to see the Prophet ﷺ first. And when she finally saw him ﷺ, she said these words that are worthy of being written in gold: “Any other suffering is equal to nothing, compared to the suffering of losing you, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” _(Ref: Seerah by Ibn Hisham, Tabqat by Ibn Sa’ad)_
